This Month’s News
A quick look at important trends, decisions, and events that affect auto recycling decision-makers, pulled from news media across the nation.
Salvage Yards Under New Screening Rules
Recycling Today magazine, July 5, 2006
A solid barrier eight feet high will have to be built around automobile impound lots, salvage and scrap yards, recycling operations and other similar businesses in Ellis County, Texas according to a recent unanimous decision made by the County Commission. Limited to the county’s unincorporated areas, the ruling requires the businesses affected to build the walls of wood, metal or masonry within 12 months. Strict requirements are a part of the ruling, including provisions that the walls not contain any advertising and those made of metal be painted in earth tones.
Junk or Gold? U-Pull-It Junkyard Could Be Pushed Out
By Thomas Monnay
South Florida Sun-Sentinel newspaper, July 8, 2006
Imagine a community with no place to store old and wrecked cars. That is exactly what will happen if town officials in Davie, Florida have their way, as a community redevelopment plan favoring new homes and retail businesses will force U-Pull-It, a large 30 year old automotive recycling facility out of operation. “It would be a mess,” says Larry Danielle, who owns U-Pull-It. “If this place has to disappear, the town and county will have to figure out what to do with 6,000 cars a month.” Making his case to town leaders, Danielle points out that he employs 82 people. He also recycles at least 60,000 cars and 20,000 tires per year which is good for the environment, and in doing so, properly disposes of oil, refrigerants and fluid from the used cars. The issue remains unresolved at press time.
City Rejects Salvage Yard Permits For Two Businesses
By Tim Jamison
Waterloo (Iowa) Courier newspaper, June 20, 2006
Who won at Waterloo?
It’s still up in the air. A recent 6-1 decision by the city
council rejected the license applications for Pat’s Auto
Salvage and Litzkow Auto because they said he “refused
inspection.” Owner Pat Rooff and Michael Pederson his attorney
sharply contest this, stating that both the Waterloo Fire and Rescue
and Black Hawk County health department were allowed access for
complete yard inspections. Despite the license denial, both Pat’s
Auto Salvage and Litzkow Auto will remain open pending the outcome of
the appeals filed in this and a previous case.
